Infusion Pumps 101: What is an IV infusion Pump?

What is an IV infusion Pump?

An IV infusion pump is a medical device to deliver fluids, medication, and nutrients into a patient's bloodstream in a controlled manner. It is typically used when a patient needs medication or fluids over an extended period, such as during surgery or treatment in a hospital.

The infusion pump consists of a pump mechanism that controls the flow rate of the fluid, a reservoir or container that holds the liquid, and tubing that connects the pump to the patient's IV catheter. The pump can be programmed to deliver a specific amount of fluid or medication over a set period of time, ensuring accurate dosing and reducing the risk of over or under-dosing.

Various infusion pumps are available, including volumetric pumps that deliver a specific volume of fluid per hour, syringe pumps that provide medication in small, precise doses, and elastomeric pumps that use a flexible balloon to deliver medication over a set period of time. Infusion pumps are used in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home care.
